Aqueducks Brings Critical Resource to Ukrainians with Aid from Volunteers for Ukraine (VfU)

We’re truly grateful to VfU and other volunteer groups who respond with speed and agility to Aqueducks and other grassroots organizations in Ukraine.”

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA, October 24, 2023 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Long before Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam was destroyed in early June 2023 reducing the fresh water supply for hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, Russia’s targeting of power and water infrastructure deprived millions of access to clean water. It’s a humanitarian crisis that’s confronted every day, liter by liter, by volunteers at Aqueducks.

Since early 2022, Aqueducks’ sole mission has been to provide clean water and filters to Ukraine’s citizens wherever it’s needed most. With vehicles, water tanks and filters provided by Volunteers for Ukraine (VfU), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and other groups, Aqueducks has been delivering water to eastern Ukraine for months. The group has moved to central Ukraine recently to truck clean drinking water to civilians who live closer to the area affected by the Kakhovka dam’s destruction.

“Through the vehicles and huge water tanks provided by groups like VfU, Aqueducks has been able to greatly increase the amount of water we can deliver each day,” says group cofounder Ben Duncan, a UK citizen with a background in film production who was drawn to help Ukraine in any way he could. “I saw it as a very black and white moral issue.” Aqueducks today is capable of delivering up to 20,000 liters of water a day with its small group of volunteers. Those deliveries are particularly critical in the area near Kakhovka Reservoir, which is now 70 percent empty as a result of the dam’s destruction.

Aqueducks cofounder Greg Holt is a retired U.S. Army major with logistics expertise. He and Ben saw the need to address water shortages as one of the best ways to assist Ukraine. “Water can’t be donated easily from outside Ukraine and wasn’t easily available in many areas across the country. We just saw it as a need that was underserved,” Ben explained.

The ability of Aqueducks to respond quickly to water emergencies is critical to the group’s mission. And it’s just as important that Aqueducks has the prompt support and resources it needs to accomplish that mission. “We’re truly grateful to VfU and other volunteer groups who respond with speed and agility to Aqueducks and other grassroots organizations in Ukraine,” says Greg. “Together, we’re having a disproportionately large impact on alleviating humanitarian problems in Ukraine.”
