Brennan Marine, Inc. (BMI), La Corsse, Wis., a provider of harbor management and fleeting services, announced it has acquired the assets of inland marine services company Matteson Marine Service, Inc., Burlington, Iowa, in a move that grows its presence on the Upper Mississippi River.

Founded in 1975, Matteson has grown from dredging and marine construction into harbor services, operating from Lock 17 in New Boston, Ill., to Burlington, Iowa. A manger and 20 mariners as well as six vessels from Matteson will be integrated into BMI’s operations, expanding its marine services portfolio in areas such as fleeting, barge cleaning, and repair services.

BMI, an affiliate of J.F. Brennan Company, Inc., La Crosse, Wis., said it has started the transition process and noted that is working with local officials and industry partners to complete the integration.

“Both Matteson and Brennan have been part of the river industry for over 50 years, evolving and adapting. Like Brennan, Matteson originally provided dredging services in addition to fleeting, and we often found ourselves competing for projects,” Mark Binsfeld, Brennan’s vice president of business development, told WorkBoat.

The dynamic changed when Matteson transitioned out of dredging and shifted its focus to building high-quality rental barges, according to Binsfeld. “Our relationship changed—we became a regular customer,” he said. “In that sense, we’ve worked alongside each other for many years, developing a strong and mutually beneficial partnership.”

“We are honored to continue the Matteson family’s legacy of hard work, family values, and stewardship on the Upper Mississippi,” Adam Binsfeld, president of Brennan Marine, said in a prepared statement. “This acquisition not only strengthens our capabilities but also reinforces our commitment to providing efficient, safe, and reliable services to our clients.”
