Joelinton: Newcastle sign Brazilian striker from Hoffenheim

Newcastle United have signed striker Joelinton from Hoffenheim for a club record £40m fee on a six-year deal.

The 22-year-old Brazilian is Steve Bruce's first signing since he was named the club's new head coach on Wednesday, replacing Rafael Benitez.

Joelinton scored 11 goals in 35 games for Hoffenheim last season, with seven of those coming in the Bundesliga.

He started his career at Brazilian side Sport Recife before moving to Germany in 2015.

The deal smashes the previous club record fee of £20m paid for Paraguay playmaker Miguel Almiron from MLS side Atlanta United in January.

"I'm really happy to be here," said Joelinton, who will wear the number nine shirt at St James' Park. "I know it is a huge responsibility, the great Alan Shearer, the team's biggest idol [wore it]. I know it is a big responsibility, but I am prepared.

"I know it is a large investment that the club has made in me, and that comes with a huge responsibility.

"I know that everybody at the club has faith in me having brought me here. I hope to contribute on the pitch. I am happy and prepared.

"Rest assured there will be no shortage of desire and dedication to score lots of goals and honour the number nine shirt."

Bruce said: "The kid has got an exciting time ahead of him. He is a smashing young player and we are obviously delighted to get him. It is been going on for a little bit now, so to get him is great for everybody.

"He has got everything that a modern-day player wants. He is big, strong and athletic, and of course he's got age on his side too which is vitally important."

Bit of a clerical error here by Newcastle, Bruce actually wanted to sign 6’6” centre-back Joe Linton from Rushden & Diamonds for £40 and a bag of chips.

This is as fishy as a Craster Kipper.
Mike Ashley doesn’t usually allow relatively large transfers like this. And I can’t see anything in the player’s previous history to warrant a fee of that size. I hope the transfer turns out a great success but something doesn’t quite sit right.

Ashley doesn't spend money - he's a skinflint.

Ashley spends money - what a waste etc.

Ashley buys a "cheap player" like Schar - the fans are underwhelmed.

Ashley sells Diame - he was great.

Ashley sells Perez - he was world class.

Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye were also deemed "underwhelming".

And yet Rondon just went to China on a free. I know the wages will be high but this guys goals record doesn't exactly make me think they have upgraded

Owners barely spend a penny over the last few years, then go big on a £40m striker.......that has never scored more than 8 goals in a season!!!!

£40,000,000 for a striker that's got a record of just under 1 goal every 4 games (25 goals in 101 senior appearances) and was loaned out for 2 years? The transfer market's gone mad.

Newcastle were bidding for Joelinton before Rafa left. Rafa wasn't interested in signing him. It isn't that the money wasn't there for him to spend, but how it was to be spent that was the issue.

Am i missing something here? Benitez was given little to no money to keep the team in the Premiership. They then bring in a 2nd rate manager and give him the funds to buy big, Confused....

Whilst the signing is welcomed and nèeded, its only the Perez fee +10 million so not a massive outlay. More needed through the door in next 16 days

Not Bruce's signing at all! All the donkey work was done long before he came on the scene. What Cashley is missing is that it's pointless spending ridiculous amounts on ONE largely unknown player when we need to be spending fair amounts on the many players that we DO need. This signing is a pathetic attempt to con the fans into thinking that he's interested in the club succeeding.
