Slapfish prepping for first Maryland opening

Slapfish is opening in Rockville, Maryland. The first restaurant in Maryland — and 13th location total — is slated to open its doors at 12055 Rockville Pike at Montrose Crossing, according to a press release.

"Maryland offers the perfect coastal location for Slapfish," CEO and Founder Chef Andrew Gruel said in the release. "With close proximity to our nation's capital and access to some of the best seafood available, Slapfish Rockville will bring East Coast flair to our uniquely branded concept."

Slapfish Rockville is owned by Chenega SF LLC and operated by Janjer Enterprises Inc. Janjer was founded by two restaurateurs, Jan Strompf and Jerry Friedlander.

As operators of 32 Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen locations throughout the region, Strompf and Friedlander were seeking a new and innovative concept to diversify their portfolio. When their real estate broker introduced them to Slapfish they were instantly sold.

After meeting with Gruel, they were drawn to his commitment to creative, chef-driven dishes and responsible sourcing practices, and knew it would be a seamless addition to their booming portfolio.

"When we first discovered Slapfish, we knew it was the perfect brand to invest in, and when we met chef Gruel, he really stood out to us as a long-term partner," Friedlander said in the release. "We believe our restaurants should not only serve the highest quality food but should also stand out in the marketplace. Slapfish is a one-of-a-kind concept, and with our prime Rockville location near the Chesapeake Bay, where quality seafood is highly sought after, we are confident that locals will fall in love with the brand as we did."

Founded by Gruel in 2011, Slapfish began as a food truck serving boat-to-plate seafood and grew into 11 brick-and-mortar locations, with 2018 openings in South Korea, the U.K., Oklahoma, Nevada, Arizona, Florida and northern California. It has more than 150 locations in development both domestically and internationally.
