VERMILLION — South Dakota’s Marleen Mülla broke a Lillibridge Track Complex record in winning the women’s pole vault at the South Dakota Challenge track and field meet, Friday in Vermillion.
Mülla’s clearance of 14-11 1/2 (4.56-meters) broke the previous mark of 14-9 (4.5 meters), set by Emily Grove in 2017. Grove was in attendance to see her facility record broken. The mark moves Mülla into second in the NCAA this season.
Following Mülla was Cassidy Mooneyhan in second at 13-11 3/4 (4.26m) and Gen Hirata and Eliza Aitken in third at 12-11 3/4 (3.96m). Kailee Swart rounded out a Coyote top five with a height of 12-6 (3.81m).
The men’s pole vault competition had plenty of excitement as well. Spencer Buley and Tre Young vaulted to new personal bests of 17-6 1/2 (5.35m). That height moves them into a tie for sixth on the Coyote Outdoor Top 10 list and ties them for 18th in the NCAA this season. The competition was called complete due to darkness with Buley, Young, and Eerik Haamer, competing unattached, still in the competition.
Outside of the top three, Owen Spartz reached new heights as a freshman, clearing 16-0 for the first time at 16-2 3/4 (4.95m). Fellow freshman Beau Karst joined him at 16-2 3/4 (4.95m).
In the women’s heptathlon event, USD’s Bre Dunn sits in fourth place and Katelyn Langford sixth after the first four events. Dunn took second in the 100-meter hurdles to open the day with a time of 15.08 seconds. She also took third in the 200-meters at 26.07. Langford best performance of the day was in the 200-meters, clocking a time of 26.68 for fifth.
Augustana’s Maria Pedroso (3,085) and Kylee Sallee (2,843) are first and second in the heptathlon. Augustana’s Ashton Massey (Menno) ranks fifth after the opening day with 2,659 points. Sioux Falls’ Tierney Faulk (Yankton) is ninth with 2,234 points.
Sioux Falls’ Jonny Cheny leads the decathlon with 3,617 points. There are no USD athletes in the six-man field.
