Easter is a time for relaxing, reflecting, and observing an important event in the Christian calendar. Scots may use Good Friday and Easter Sunday to gather their family and indulge in some Easter eggs, and rightly so.

However, Brits were left gobsmacked recently after new Which? research found that Easter eggs from brands like Cadbury, Mars and Terry’s have gone up in price by up to 50 per cent in some cases - and some have shrunk in size.

According to the Which? supermarket food and drink inflation tracker, the price of chocolate has risen by 16.5 per cent in a year - far more than the overall price of supermarket food and drink, which is up 4.4 per cent.

The consumer champion also found that some Easter eggs went up by as much as 56 per cent per 100 grams, year on year.

The reason for the higher price tag on sugary goods has been attributed to a steep fall in global cocoa production, which has started driving wholesale costs to record highs.

But the shock doesn't end there. As Scots shop for their favourite chocolate treats ahead of Easter festivities, another piece of research has uncovered the shocking price increases of some well-known Easter favourites.

The team at Spin Genie UK analysed the prices of the most popular Easter egg chocolate from 2020 to 2025, looked into the average percentage increase and used compound growth to provide the estimated 2030 prices.

It turns out the average annual increase score across all three Easter chocolates is 10.78 per cent per year. For example, Cadbury Mini Eggs are set to cost £4.17 by 2030 - nearly four times their 2020 price.

That means Mini Eggs cost 90 per cent more this year than 2020, jumping from £1.15 to £2.19, making them the fastest-rising Easter treat.

What's more, the combined price of Cadbury Mini Eggs, a Creme Egg, and a Lindt Gold Bunny have jumped from £4.72 in 2020 to £7.43 in 2025. That's a whopping 57 per cent increase.

And by 2030? Spin Genie UK issued a stark warning for chocolate lovers for five years' time as they can apparently expect to pay £11.90 for the same treats.

The issue entered the political realm last week when a Scottish Labour MP announced he is fighting to stop Easter eggs from getting smaller and more expensive.

Blair McDougall wants to force companies to clearly label when they make their products smaller. The East Renfrewshire MP is tabling the Shrinkflation Labelling bill in the House of Commons this week.

The Labour MP told the Record: “These companies are treating us like fools. On Easter morning there will be a lot of scunnered families when they open their Easter eggs and discover they’re not egg shaped any more.

"This is the latest example of shrinkflation where companies rip off consumers by making a product smaller, without being honest about it with their customers...

"If they were forced to label clearly when they shrink their products, consumers could make an informed choice to take their money elsewhere.”
