Amid slumping sales all across the retail sector in the United States even the country's largest brick and mortar stores aren't immune from the shift to online shopping.
Walmart, which operates over 4,000 stores in the U.S., has closed 11 stores in several states across the U.S. Many of the stores are underperforming as the company continues to battle competition from online retailers like Amazon and Temu. A full list of banking closures can be found here.
The stores confirmed to have closed so far are listed as follows. A large amount of the stores closed were in California, which has other options for grocery and retail shopping, but that isn't the case for many rural areas. When Walmart first began expanding they often pushed smaller grocers out of many communities as they couldn't compete with Walmarts bargain prices.

The closing of these Walmarts in rural areas can often result in food deserts, where residents don't have local access to fresh food and often have to drive hours out of the area to buy groceries.
In 2016, Walmart shuttered 154 stores resulting in the creation of three food deserts in Arkansas, Walmarts home state, and two in Alabama, according to analysis at the time by the Associated Press.
None of the stores closed this year so far were in typically rural areas and Walmart in 2020 announced they would be partnering with former First Lady Michelle Obama to open 300 new locations in food deserts to help combat childhood obesity and give families of these communities access to healthier options.
However it is unclear how far this initiative actually went and if it had any impact on food deserts. In 2024 Walmart closed its location in East Albuquerque, New Mexico, leaving many residents of the area to turn to food pantries.
