Bursa Malaysia appoints Farid Alias as new chairman, effective May 1

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia has appointed Tan Sri Abdul Farid Alias as the new chairman, effective May 1, 2025.

Farid, 57, who has been a member of the Bursa Malaysia board since July 2022, will succeed Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, who is retiring on April 30 after completing his five-year term as chairman of Bursa Malaysia.

In a statement, the stock exchange operator said the appointment was made by the Minister of Finance under Sections 10(1)(a) and (3) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007.

“The exchange will continue to strengthen and thrive under Farid, who embodies the same core values that drive Bursa Malaysia’s purpose-focused growth, ensuring a continuation of the exchange’s commitment to creating opportunities and growing value for our stakeholders,” Wahid said.

Farid, was the group president and CEO of Malayan Banking Bhd from 2013 to 2022. A seasoned Chartered Banker, he brings 30 years of experience in the banking and financial services sector, specialising in investment banking, commercial banking, and capital markets.

He currently serves on the board of CapitaLand Investment Limited (Singapore) and CelcomDigi Bhd, and is also a Council Member of the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers.

He is also a member of the Board of Visitors for the Pennsylvania State University’s Smeal College of Business.

Farid holds a Master of Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Denver, USA, and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Pennsylvania State University. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
