Chicago-based renewables developer Hecate Energy has been granted a permit to build a 150-MW solar park in Virginia, anticipating to break ground on the project in 2028.

The approval of the company’s siting agreement and conditional use permit application was issued by the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors, the developer said on Tuesday. It expects that an environmental permit will be granted by Virginia's Department of Environmental Quality this year or in early 2025.

The greenlit scheme will represent an infrastructure investment of roughly USD 200 million (EUR 187.2m).

The Cumberland solar farm will be installed in Cartersville community across a site of almost 1,000 acres (404,7 ha). When commissioned in 2030, it will be capable of generating more than 300,000 MWh of electricity annually, or enough to supply over 37,500 average homes in Virginia.

Hecate estimates that the Cumberland project will bring USD 14 million in direct payments to Cumberland County. Its construction will open about 150 jobs.
