Prime Minister Hun Sen and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed the same desire for a free trade agreement (FTA) between Cambodia and Bangladesh to expand trade between both countries.

The two prime ministers met in the side-lines of the 77th UNGA at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA in the afternoon of 22 September (EST).

Dr Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister, said that both prime ministers discussed a number of issues related to strengthening cooperation and trade relations between the two countries. There is also talk of importing rice from Cambodia to Bangladesh.

In the past, Cambodia and Bangladesh negotiated to buy about 200,000 tons of rice from Cambodia. The Prime Minister pushed for the stable exporting of rice from the Kingdom to Bangladesh.

The Premier also invited a Bangladeshi company to Cambodia to invest in a rice processing warehouse as a rice mill for export to Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Hasina informed Mr Hun Sen that she had asked the private sector to invest in Cambodia in the agricultural sector, especially the export of rice from Cambodia. She also expressed a desire to push for trade agreements between the two countries to increase exports and increase investment opportunities.
