First Electricity Exchanges with Ukraine/Republic of Moldova on Romania Interconnection

Commercial electricity exchanges with Ukraine/Republic of Moldova are planned to start on June 30, 2022, on the interconnection between Ukraine and Romania.

The Transmission and System Operators (TSOs) in Continental Europe have confirmed that the preliminary technical conditions have been fulfilled to allow commercial electricity exchanges between Ukraine and the neighboring states. This process follows the successful synchronization of the electric power systems, achieved on March 16, 2022, and Ukrenergo’s acceptance as observer member of ENTSO-E, on April 26, 2022. These achievements were obtained as a result of sustained efforts from all TSOs in Europe, especially on the part of Ukrenergo and operators in the neighboring states.

Commercial electricity exchanges with Ukraine/Republic of Moldova are due to start on June 30, 2022 on the interconnection between Ukraine and Romania. Electricity trading on the other interconnections (Ukraine-Slovakia, Ukraine-Hungary and Moldova-Romania) will take place subsequently, after completing the aspects on auction rules. The total commercial capacity will be limited in a first phase to 100 MW, and after this initial stage the traded values are expected to increase gradually, following a monthly assessment of the impact of the volumes exchanged on the stability and security of the energy system.

This achievement is an additional step, reached in less than four months from the emergency synchronization of the systems of Ukraine and Republic of Moldova with the European grid and, in addition, proves the strong commitment of European transmission and system operators to Ukrenergo (the Transmission and System Operator of Ukraine) and Moldelectrica (the Transmission and System Operator of the Republic of Moldova). The process of harmonization of technical and commercial details regarding exchanges between Romania and the Republic of Moldova will also be completed in the near future.

Transelectrica is operator of the Romanian Transmission and System Operator, which operates interconnected with the European electric power system, through interconnections with the neighboring countries: Ukraine, Serbia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Currently, the grid managed by Transelectrica has a total cross-border capacity of about 3,000 MW, following to reach the value of 7,000 MW by 2030.

ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, is the association for the cooperation of the European transmission system operators (TSOs). The 39 member transmission and system operators, representing 35 countries, are responsible for the secure and coordinated operation of Europe’s electricity system, the largest interconnected electrical grid in the world.
