Prime Minister Robert Abela and Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri inaugurate the Marsalforn Waterfront project

The €3 million Marsalforn waterfront project has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.

This project forms part of the masterplan for this popular bay which is frequented by Gozitans, Maltese, and tourists, and follows the inauguration of the Menqa regeneration project in November

The Prime Minister described this project as one that provides for “substantial parts of this area to be given to the people with the aim of them being able to enjoy it for much of the day.”

In this context, the Prime Minister pointed out that in Gozo, “jobs need to be created and the economy strengthened. This serves as a basis for further such projects.”

He went on to say that, “a country continues to grow if it invests in its people. I an satisfied that in Gozo today we have the lowest number of people registering as unemployed in its history – 15% less than we had before the pandemic started.”

The Prime Minister added that, “we must continue to invest in accessibility and infrastructure so that these businesses around us can continue to make a living for their families and the families of their workers.”

The Prime Minister spoke about the future of Gozo and about the “Government’s commitment to turn the challenges on this island into opportunities for Gozo to move forward.”

“I encourage everyone to participate in the consultation on the strategy for Gozo. A document made for Gozo in Gozo itself,” he said. “A process where ideas are really born out of the community. A model that I believe should be the basis of how a Government works.”

Dr Abela concluded by saying that the “Government’s vision for Gozo is one that wants an island that stands out for what only it can offer. For Gozo to marry the environment and the economy and to be a model of how to build new prosperity.”

Minister for Gozo, Clint Camilleri, stated that “we fulfilled what we promised on this project. It will not only raise the level of tourism in Gozo but will also continue to put this tiny island on the tourist map of many who will choose Gozo and Malta as their holiday destination.”

The Minister said that the most difficult change was to make the whole area pedestrianised. However this was the most important change, he said, “a measure which is also in line with government policy to encourage the adoption of more environmentally friendly modes of transport and a healthier lifestyle, with the only access for vehicles that are permitted to provide a service.”

The Government has also applied with the Planning Authority to rebuild the breakwater in the bay, he said

The Menqa jetty has been rebuilt. A service culverts system has been set up, new storm water culverts have been installed, water and sewerage services have been changed. Urban planning was carried out around the entire waterfront and surrounding areas as well as landscaping through all the main roads – with lava porphyry paving of Triq il-Port, Triq il-Forn, Triq San Guzepp, Triq ir-Rabat and Sir Michelangelo Refalo Square as well as the installation of new lighting and street furniture to give the area a “contemporary look.”
