The European Union imposed economic sanctions against Belarus in response to what Brussels considers an escalation of serious human rights violations, AP reported.

The sanctions target both the economy and President Alexander Lukashenko and his allies.

Specifically, the sanctions target economic sectors, including potash fertilizers, a common fertilizer ingredient, tobacco industry exports, and petroleum products.

Trade in petroleum products, potassium chloride, and goods used to make or manufacture tobacco products is restricted, the EU said in a statement.

The sanctions also include a ban on the sale to Belarus of hardware and software that can be used to monitor the Internet and phone calls. The sanctions also limited Belarus' access to EU capital markets and suspended payments to the country's public sector by the European Investment Bank.

On Monday, EU foreign ministers imposed a travel ban and froze the assets of 78 Belarusian officials and 8 legal entities.

In total, 166 people and 15 legal entities in Belarus are under EU restrictive measures. The United States, Great Britain, and Canada have also imposed sanctions on high-ranking Belarusian officials.
