Haiti - Justice : A mediation and arbitration center for the Caribbean zone
The International Arbitration Forum, which took place in Port-au-Prince at the beginning of March for two days, was attended by internationally renowned panelists who discussed key topics for the future of arbitration as: the possibility to obtain compensation for the violation of human rights through arbitration and mediation; the conduct of the arbitration by the arbitrator and in particular the questions of ethics; the enforcement of sentences and finally the investment arbitration.

Alternative dispute resolution, arbitration and mediation training workshops were also held, as well as events for young practitioners of the "Young ICCA" association.

The future Directorate of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in the Caribbean (OHADAC) delivered the opening address to members of the Government, senior representatives of the international community and from the world of business in Haiti and certain neighboring countries, as well as lawyers and senior judges. The issues surrounding the regionalization of international arbitration and mediation have been explored. The challenges that Haiti and the Caribbean territories face in taking ownership of this institution and playing a decisive role in achieving the balanced and sustainable economic growth goals of the Caribbean were particularly highlighted.

Let's recall that an OHADAC mediation and arbitration center accessible to small and medium-sized Caribbean companies located in Guadeloupe will see the day in 2018. This Center will be supported by a community of international arbitration specialists and will provide a quality of service comparable to that of large institutions. It will be led by Marie-Camille Pitton, Lawyer at the New York Bar, Harvard Law School graduate, Doctor of Laws and former ICC Advisor. It will address the : trade arbitrations to provide Caribbean entrepreneurs with effective procedural solutions tailored to their needs; mediation by offering entrepreneurs in the Caribbean area the opportunity to involve a third party to inform them of the extent of their rights and obligations, and to enable them to reach agreement on possible disputes may exist between them and in the medium term it will provide a specific procedural regulation for investment disputes. Experts are currently in charge of drafting OHADAC model legislation in the area of investment protection, incorporating regional considerations.
